Can you lie on a life insurance application about smoking?
It may be tempting to adjust your answers on an application to get a better rate, but lying on a life insurance application constitutes insurance fraud. Intentionally omitting health information may result in your application getting denied or possible death benefits not being paid to your beneficiaries.
If you report inaccurate or false information about your tobacco use on an application, an insurer is allowed to retroactively impose the tobacco surcharge to the beginning of the plan year. However, the insurer is not allowed to cancel your coverage because of the false or incorrect information.
Some insurers will reduce the premium after only 12 months as a non-smoker, but many will still charge you higher premiums for up to five years after you stop smoking or using nicotine. It really depends on your circ*mstances. And it's important to be honest about your past.
It is possible for a life insurer to deny a claim for smoking. If the policyholder lied on their application and said they were a nonsmoker, and the insurer later finds out that this is untrue, it has grounds to cancel the policy or deny paying the death benefit to beneficiaries.
Current smoker: An adult who has smoked 100 cigarettes in his or her lifetime and who currently smokes cigarettes. Beginning in 1991 this group was divided into “everyday” smokers or “somedays” smokers.
The best way to pass a nicotine test is to avoid nicotine for up to 10 days before the test, as blood tests can still detect cotinine for 10 days. There is no sure way to flush the body of nicotine quickly, but people may try maintaining a healthy lifestyle so that their body works efficiently.
Don't do it. If you're not honest about tobacco, you risk being charged with insurance fraud. Even such “soft fraud” is considered a misdemeanor and can result in sentences of probation, community service — or even time in jail.
To get life insurance, you're often required to take a medical exam, which may include a test for nicotine. But life insurance companies don't just test for nicotine during the exam. Cotinine is an alkaloid found in the body after nicotine is metabolized, so it's an indicator of nicotine use.
Whether you smoke now, are a former smoker, or plan to quit, you may have options when it comes to life insurance. Term, whole life, guaranteed issue, and simplified issue may all be available to a smoker, but you can expect to pay higher premiums.
Whether you prefer cigarettes or vaping, life insurance for smokers is still available. But it will generally cost you more than it would for a non-smoker. This is because of the higher risk of death and disease that comes with tobacco.
How long after quitting smoking are you considered a non smoker?
After 15 years of quitting smoking, a person's risk of coronary heart disease becomes close to that of someone who does not smoke.
Some insurance companies may consider you a smoker on that basis alone. Most insurance companies, however, will consider you a smoker if you have used a tobacco product at least four times per week for the last six months.
People also process nicotine differently depending on their genetics. Generally, nicotine will leave your blood within 1 to 3 days after you stop using tobacco, and cotinine will be gone after 1 to 10 days. Neither nicotine nor cotinine will be detectable in your urine after 3 to 4 days of stopping tobacco products.
There is not a consensus on how to best define “light smoking” (7, 12, 14). Light smokers have been classified as smoking less than 1 pack/day, less than 15 cig/day, less than 10 cig/day, and smoking 1–39 cig/week (9, 14).
This is because smoking is considered a health risk that can reduce your life expectancy, and life insurance companies reserve higher rates for those that aren't expected to live as long. It's important to note that if you have a smoking-related disease, an insurer may choose to deny your request for a policy.
Avoid nicotine products, including vaping and smoking-cessation products, for at least 12 months before application submission. Get a medical exam by a doctor before submitting your application, including a urine test, which may reveal the presence of cotinine, a substance that is left in the body after tobacco use.
Water helps flush nicotine and other chemicals out of your body. Therefore, drinking water in sufficient quantities is a must for every smoker. However, it will make you urinate more often. Frequent urination is helpful because nicotine, cotinine and most tobacco toxins are removed from the body through urine.
If the life insurance drug test detects nicotine and/or cotinine, which is an alkaloid found in tobacco, you may have to pay two to three times higher premiums than a nonsmoker.
The bottom line. If you smoke, traces of nicotine can be found in your hair, blood, urine, and saliva. It can be detected in your urine for at least 3 days after your exposure to nicotine and in your hair for weeks or more.
Any substance you vape can show up during your medical exam or in your health history. If you misrepresent your e-cig use and die during the policy's contestability period your insurance company can refuse to pay the death benefit to your beneficiaries, leaving them without financial protection.
Do insurance companies ask if you smoke?
You will be charged a higher premium for your life insurance policy if you smoke. For this reason, life insurance companies have devised a variety of methods to detect tobacco use among their applicants. They start by simply asking you on the life insurance application if you smoke.
Electronic cigarette use is not considered in the definition of current cigarette smoking or any use of tobacco products.
Urine. Results of a urine test depend on how soon you provide the urine sample after your last smoke: If you smoke occasionally, cotinine may be found in your urine for about 4 days. If you are a regular smoker, cotinine may be found in your urine for up to 3 weeks.
Nicotine stays in your saliva for about 24 hours, making it detectable with saliva tests taken during this time. 4 Cotinine can be detected for up to seven days after it was last used or up to 14 days in heavy smokers. To perform this test, a technician swabs the inside of your mouth and tests oral fluids for nicotine.
Health insurers cannot outright deny coverage to smokers, but they can charge them higher premiums than non-smokers. The Affordable Care Act allows insurance companies to charge smokers up to 50% more for premiums.
