Do you need credit to borrow from life insurance?
Borrowing against life insurance can be a good option for those looking for a loan with low-interest rates, flexible repayment terms and no credit check. However, it also comes with downsides like a reduced death benefit, risk of policy lapse and significant interest accumulation.
Pros of life insurance loans
It's simple to borrow provided you have enough cash value — and there's no credit or income check involved. You can get excellent terms such as a comparatively low interest rate and no strict repayment schedule.
Even though your credit score won't directly affect your life insurance application, certain details from your credit report can indicate that you might be a financial risk to your provider, such as: Bankruptcy. Carrying large credit card balances. High percentage of credit card use.
The $10,000 refers to the face value of the policy, otherwise known as the death benefit, and does not represent the cash value of life insurance policy. A $10,000 term life insurance policy has no cash value.
You can simply take money out of the cash value with a withdrawal. You can withdraw up to the amount you've paid in premiums without paying taxes on the funds. Withdrawals will reduce the death benefit.
Most importantly, you can only borrow against a permanent life insurance policy, meaning either a whole life insurance or universal life insurance policy. Term life insurance, a cheaper and more suitable option for many people, does not have a cash value.
The amount you can borrow depends on the cash value of the policy. Typically, the insurer will let you borrow up to 90% of the cash value. However, in some cases, they might allow you to borrow up to 100% of the cash value. Check your policy and talk with your life insurance agent to determine how much you can borrow.
Most insurance companies using credit information will include it as a factor in determining your rate. For example, someone with a relatively high credit score may pay a lower premium than someone with a relatively low credit score.
They can include engaging in risky hobbies and behaviors like skydiving; having a history of DUIs or speeding tickets; having a dangerous job like roofing; having a criminal record or a less than ideal financial history; being a smoker; and failing a drug test.
Life insurance may not be worth if you have no dependents, if you have a tight budget, or if you have other plans for providing for them after your death.
What happens if you don't pay back a life insurance loan?
When this happens, your beneficiaries lose their inheritance from the life insurance, and you lose the opportunity to use the money again in the future. In addition, if you don't pay the loan back and the amount you borrow reaches the amount of cash value (or exceeds it), you may find yourself owing taxes.
How long does it take to build cash value on life insurance? The length of time varies by insurer, but in most cases, cash value does not start to accrue until you have paid premiums for two to five years.
Age | Term length | Average monthly rate |
---|---|---|
40 | Term length10 years | Average monthly rate$47.41 |
40 | Term length15 years | Average monthly rate$61.33 |
40 | Term length30 years | Average monthly rate$137.89 |
50 | Term length10 years | Average monthly rate$112.67 |
You will typically find it listed separately in your life insurance statements. The net cash value will generally be lower than your total accumulated cash value for the first several years of coverage, as it's reduced by fees and surrender charges.
If you've built up a sizable cash value, you may also choose to take out a loan against your policy. Life insurance companies often offer these cash-value loans at interest rates lower than a traditional bank loan. Of course, you're not obligated to pay back the loan since you're essentially borrowing your own money.
Why? First up, you're going into debt, which is never a good idea. Second, you'll have to pay interest on the loan, and if you don't pay all of it back, your death benefit will decrease. Think about how crazy this is—you're paying interest on a loan made up of your own money.
You could potentially take a loan from your policy, withdraw the cash value it's accrued over time, use a living benefit rider or sell your policy. A financial advisor can help you integrate a life insurance policy into your financial plan. Find an advisor today.
How does Debt Free Life® work? For individuals who are paying their bills on time and contribute to a savings or retirement account, Debt Free Life is a modern way to pay off your debt using the cash value of a specialized whole life insurance policy. Extra funds are redirected into the cash value of your policy.
Examples of Cash Value Life Insurance
An example is a cash value life insurance policy with a $25,000 death benefit. Assuming you don't take out a loan or withdraw, the cash value accumulates to $5,000. After the policyholder's death, the insurance company would pay out the full death benefit, which would be $25,000.
The insurance company will pay you interest (or dividends) on the amount borrowed, although this rate is usually lower than the interest rate credited to the remainder of cash value. On certain policies, you will receive the same interest rate.
How much can I borrow from a 50k life insurance policy?
Many life insurance companies will allow you to borrow as much as 90% of the cash value within your policy. For example, if you have $50,000 in cash value, some universal life, and whole life policies allow you to borrow up to $45,000. Remember that you will be charged an interest rate on your life insurance loan.
Similar to how creditors can use different types of credit scores, insurance companies can choose from various credit-based insurance scores. For example, FICO, TransUnion and LexisNexis all create credit-based insurance scores, and insurance companies also might develop their own scores.
Because there is no credit check, the loan won't affect your credit score. Plus, there are no restrictions on what the money from a policy loan can be used for. Interest rates on policy loans are often lower than on traditional loans.

What Age Does Life Insurance Expire? The age 100 maturity date means the policy expires and coverage ends when the insured person turns 100. One possible result is that the policyholder (and their heirs) get nothing, despite decades of paying into the policy. But times change, and now people tend to live longer.
