Mexico became the top U.S. trading partner at the beginning of 2023, with total bilateral trade between the two countries totaling $263 billion during the first four months of this year. Figures released Wednesday by the U.S. Commerce Department show that the value of goods imported by the United States from Mexico rose nearly 5% from 2022 to 2023, to more than $475 billion. At the same time, the value of Chinese imports tumbled 20% to $427 billion.

Which country might dominate world trade?
Overall, China is likely to remain the world's leading exporter for the near future. However, its exports dominance in the global economy may be approaching its peak.
These trade surpluses are especially visible in China's trade relationships with many of the world's largest economies, including the U.S. and India, with $401.1 billion and $100.3 billion surpluses respectively. Meanwhile, a good sum of the country's trade deficits are with major Asian economies.
While the Bureau of Economic Analysis divides imports into six categories, the three largest are: capital goods, consumer goods, and industrial supplies.In May 2022: Computers were the top imports in the capital goods category. Pharmaceuticals, including packaged medications, were the top category in consumer goods.
Oil is top U.S. export
Looking at the top 10 U.S. exports, which surpassed $2 trillion for the second straight year despite a 2.2% decline from 2022, after oil (down 1.9%), were: Civilian aircraft and parts (up 20.2%) Gasoline and other refined petroleum products (down 15.6%) LNG and other natural gases (down 29.8%)
Mexico's main exports are manufactured products (89 percent of total shipments) and oil and oil products (7 percent). Among manufactured products, metallic, machinery and equipment is the major category (59 percent) and automobiles account for around 29 percent of total sales.
