Allstate vs. Progressive Home Insurance Coverage Comparison

Both Allstate and Progressive offer policies with dwelling, other structures, personal property, loss of use, liability, and medical payments to others coverage. The biggest difference is that Allstate offers more deductibles and endorsem*nt options.

Allstate Coverage

Allstate determines dwelling coverage by asking you questions about your home and estimating its rebuilding cost. A percentage of that number is also used for other structures, personal property, and loss of use coverage.

You have more of a choice with liability, medical payments, and deductible amounts, especially considering how deductibles are split up into three categories by peril with Allstate.

To further customize your Allstate coverage, you can add any of these optional add-ons to your plan:

  • Roof surfaces extended coverage
  • Water backup
  • Green improvement reimbursem*nt
  • Extended coverage on jewelry, watches, and furs
  • Identity theft restoration
  • Claim rate guard
  • Yard and garden
  • Scheduled personal property
  • Electronic data recovery
  • Business property
  • Musical instruments
  • Sports equipment

Progressive Coverage

Like Allstate, Progressive’s dwelling, other structures, personal property, and loss of use amounts are determined by the rebuilding cost of your home.

Personal property

Loss of use

Note: Our team was unable to receive liability and medical payments to others coverage details over the phone, so we recommend reaching out to the Progressive team for specifics.

Progressive advertises two endorsem*nts on its website:

  • Water backup
  • Personal injury

Because Progressive uses underwriting companies, you may have access to more endorsem*nts depending on the company that Progressive uses in your area.

Allstate vs. Progressive Home Insurance Cost Comparison

According to the Insurance Information Institute, the average cost of homeowners insurance in 2017 was about $101 per month. However, certain factors about you and your home may increase or decrease that rate. For example, if you have a history of filing a lot of claims or your home is in an area with a high level of crime, your policy premiums may increase.

To see how Allstate and Progressive policy costs compare to the national average, we received quotes from both companies.

Our Conclusion

After reviewing Progressive and Allstate, the This Old House Reviews Team found that Progressive homeowners insurance is more affordable, but Allstate offers more comprehensive coverage.

Progressive policies are well under the national average of $100 per month, but the insurance provider uses underwriting companies to sell home insurance, which means the company acts as a third party that sells other companies’ policies. This makes it difficult to know what insurance will look like for homeowners in every state and means that you’ll likely have to communicate more with the underwriting company than with Progressive.

Another downside to Progressive is that you can’t get a quote online. While you can start the quote process on the website, you’re prompted to call the customer service line halfway through to finish the quote with someone over the phone. This added an hour of time to the Progressive quote process.

On the other hand, Allstate allows you to complete your full quote process online. You also have access to more discounts and endorsem*nts, and you can get answers to your questions at any time through the company’s customer portal, mobile app, and 24/7 customer service center.
