Yesterday, I had the opportunity of delivering an overview of investment banking careers and M&A at UCL.Every year, I see students tripping over the same hurdles in their quest to break into banking. It's time to quit tripping and start sprinting!๐ต๏ธ Here are some insider tips from someone who has placed more than 250 students in banking over the past 7 years at top companies including Goldman Sachs, UBS, JP Morgan and MS among many others. โ The early bird catches the worm. Make your move now! Secure spring weeks and summer internships to give yourself a head start when it comes to graduate jobs.โ If leading investment banks like Goldman Sachs or J.P. Morgan shut their doors, don't lose heart. There's a whole world of boutique investment banks awaiting your application.โ Did you know there are over 2,000 financial services companies in the UK? Set a high target; aim to apply for 50 to 100 jobs each month. That's how you secure 2 to 5 interviews per month.Ready to break into banking like a pro?

Have client names and contact information readily available3. Send cheat sheet email to MD before the call if appropriate or even better if you have a cheat sheet so you could chime in4. Prepare before the call, know background, who will be on the call, what do they know5. Always announce yourself on calls, donโt hide, be visible6. Always be prepared to turn on video camera for Zoom meetings (typically you donโt need to when you have not speaking role, but if everyone else turns it on you have to do so. You donโt want to be the stalking person who is afraid to turn on the video because your hair looks messy, and you wear an orange T-shirt7. When in doubt turn on your video on a Zoom call. It is a way to build relationship with the client even if you donโt have a speaking role8. Know how to introduce yourself. Practice it with your VP. They wonโt think this is odd9. Come up with small talk and phrases when joining the call early and youโre the only one from the bank10. Write down how other opened the call and finished the call (sentences that can help you when your VP is late from calls)11.-100. I recently participated in JPMorganโsvirtual job simulation on the Forage platform, and it was incredibly useful to understand what it might be like to be part of an investment banking team at JPMorgan. The job simulation enabled me to become more familiar with advanced Excel and PowerPointand to develop my passion for supporting clients through large, complex transactions. These are the tasks I performed during my internship.* Identified an ideal M&A target for a client based on an assessment of their strategic and financial criteria.* Constructed a DCF model to calculate the valuation of the M&A target andadjusted the model to account for a competitor bid and supply chaininterruption.* Created a 2-pager for the client containing a company profile and summary ofthe auction process.Overall it was a great experience โค๏ธ #jpmorganchase #jpmorgan #investmentbanking

Worried you will fail to land a job in investment banking? It's no secret the competition is fierce:๐ผ JP Morgan:270,000 applicants annually๐ผ Goldman Sachs:Over 250,000 applications๐ผ UBS, Morgan Stanley:70,000+ applicants each yearFeeling overwhelmed? Don't despair! Ditch the "lottery mentality" and consider this strategy:๐ Start at a Boutique Investment Bank:Instead of battling the masses, target smaller firms with more manageable applicant pools (a few hundred to a thousand).โจ Here are some success stories from City Investment Training:Four of my course graduates in the past three weeks secured offers at prestigious boutique and mid-market banks. Many will undoubtedly transition to leading firms later. In fact, most of my bulge bracket hires either started at boutiques or landed off-cycle internships at bigger banks such as UBS and HSBC.โ But wait here's the catch! The only snag with boutique investment banks is that they need applicants who are already proficient with..โ Accountingโ Financial modelling โ Valuations andโ Superior Excel and PowerPoint skills The Takeaway:Invest in Yourself:Gain relevant knowledge before applying. My course equips you with the skills sought by boutique banks.Seek Smarter Opportunities:Prioritize realistic options with higher success rates.Break the Cycle:Escape the "rat race" and carve your own path to success.Ready to make a strategic move?
