Can gold ETF be converted to physical gold?
Most ETFs do not allow investors to withdraw their share of gold. Instead, they use derivative contracts to hold the physical gold.
Since these ETFs are backed by physical gold, investing in them is generally just as safe as investing in gold coins and bars — at least in terms of protecting yourself from market volatility and inflation. In fact, depending on your definition of safe, physical gold ETFs may be safer than gold coins and bars.
You can convert your digital gold to physical gold anytime you want. You need a minimum of one gram of gold in your digital gold account to convert it into a physical form of gold, like gold coins, bars, etc.
Disadvantages of investing in gold ETFs
Physical gold provides a higher level of security than Gold ETFs, as it eliminates counterparty risk. Gold ETFs may not perform as well as physical gold during times of economic uncertainty or geopolitical instability.

One Gold ETF unit is equal to 1 gram of gold and is backed by physical gold of very high purity. Gold ETFs combine the flexibility of stock investment and the simplicity of gold investments. Gold ETFs are listed and traded on the National Stock Exchange of India (NSE) and Bombay Stock Exchange Ltd.
Compared to paper gold and fiat currencies, physical gold is much more stable. It can withstand political and government interference, as its value extends beyond national borders. And while other investments and fiat currencies have come and gone, physical gold is still highly valued, even after thousands of years.
Because gold stocks don't mimic the prices of gold bullion, they provide less diversification to your investment portfolio. So, if the stock market crashes, your investment in a gold miner or manufacturer will likely suffer as well, while the price of physical gold will increase.
Gold bullion includes coins and bars. These items hold intrinsic value due to their precious metal content. Investors often choose gold bullion for its tangible nature, as it offers a sense of security that digital assets cannot replicate.
Following the recent SEBI / Exchange directive, we are discontinuing our Digital Gold product. What does this mean? While you can no longer buy Digital Gold on Upstox, you can still sell Digital Gold till 5th September 2021 on our platform.
Can I buy physical gold from a bank?
Banks. Some banks in the U.S. sell gold bars and coins (as well as silver coins). This can be a good option for investors who prefer the public accountability of a federally regulated institution. However, your options may be limited compared to what you'll find at an online retailer.
With gold, you'll encounter fees when making your purchase but you'll have full ownership afterward. With gold ETFs, however, you'll be hit with charges for the entire life of your investment. Fees related to marketing and management are constant expenses that you'll have to deal with.
Both digital gold and gold ETF may look very similar. The key difference is the physical delivery option by digital gold, while gold ETF does not have this option. However, choosing between the two depends on individual preferences and investment objectives.
The organisation noted that "as the market pushed back against bets on early rate cuts by major central banks, gold prices retreated in January, dimming investors' interest in gold ETFs." Funds endured net outflows of $2.8 billion last month, equivalent to some 51 tonnes.
The most important difference between physical ownership and investing in an ETF is the actual ownership of the gold. With physical gold, you own the precious metal in the form of coins, bars, or bullion. With a physical gold ETF, you own a share of a fund that holds physical gold, but you do not own the gold directly.
Ticker | ETF Name | 1-year return |
---|---|---|
BGLD | FT Vest Gold Strategy Quarterly Buffer ETF | 8.33% |
IAUM | iShares Gold Trust Micro ETF of Benef Interest | 5.94% |
AAAU | Goldman Sachs Physical Gold ETF | 5.77% |
OUNZ | VanEck Merk Gold Trust | 5.69% |
The largest gold exchange-traded fund, or ETF, by a wide margin, is the SPDR Gold Trust, the go-to way for investors looking to play the precious metal.
If you don't want to own physical gold but still want to be involved in the market, a mining-focused gold ETF could be a good choice. These companies' stock prices often rise and fall along with the price of gold, so they are still a conduit into the gold market.
Gold went on a bull run after the Gold ETF approval. We have observed a 90% correlation between the gold ETF AUM — Assets Under Management — and the gold price.
Leveraged 3X Gold ETFs seek to provide investors with a magnified daily or monthly return on physical gold prices. The funds use futures contracts to accomplish their goals and can be either long or inversed.
How much physical gold should I own?
That said, it's generally not an income-producing asset in the same way that more volatile stocks and bonds can be. So you'll need to invest in the precious metal differently than you would with those assets. Most experts recommend limiting your gold investment to 10% or less of your overall portfolio.
You can buy physical gold from dealers like JM Bullion and APMEX, as well as pawn and jewelry shops. Keep in mind that purchasing gold from jewelry stores and pawn shops could be riskier as it could end up being a lower karat and have a higher markup.
Gold Bars. This is the form of gold bullion that has the most value. Gold bars can range from 1 ounce to a few kilos. One can get as much value in a gold bar as one can afford.
1 Gram Gold Bar
One gram gold bars are typically the smallest sized bars (. 032 troy oz) that an investor can purchase. The premium on these bars is higher than other gold bars since it takes just about the same amount of effort to process this size as it does for a bar that is larger.
Gold bars also known as Gold bullion which is at least 99.5% pure and because of its purity this makes it the most valuable and easiest type of Gold to sell. Gold bars are normally produced by accredited refiners and mints.
